What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom from slavery and is the oldest African-American Holiday observance. In 1862 President Lincoln wrote and proposed the Emancipation Proclamation. It was approved in January of 1863 and enforced in 1865. However, the majority of slaves in the South were not aware of their freedom until June 19, 1865. To honor our ancestors, liberation and freedom: Juneteenth was born and that is how and why we celebrate this significant moment in history.

On September 22, 1862, President Lincoln issued a proclamation notifying the rebellious states that if they did not return to the union by January 1, 1863, he would declare their slaves "forever free." This led to the Emancipation Proclamation which declared that slaves of the eleven rebel states free. We invite you to celebrate the history that our ancestors found out they were free on the 19th of June of 1865, Our Independence Day.
We challenge you to learn more about Juneteenth and African American history because their is so much more to learn. To know your history is to better understand your culture and who you are. Knowledge is power.
There will be plenty of activities scheduled on Friday June 19th including a parade, food vendors and fun.
The celebration continues on Saturday June 20th with activities all day long.
